Carpe That DM 😈 - Skrillex wipes his IG account, Avicii's Netflix documentary looks boring, Apple Music just opened up a new Club, and much more...

Oh hey, how are ya - it’s Fourth Co.

Everyday, about 150,000 new songs are released to the world.

That means, there’s been over 1,651,200,000 tracks released since Mariah Carey dropped her inconic Christmas banger.

Only a handful of those deserve your attention, so let’s pitter patter…

Steal This - my most played song this week (probably):

Why it gets me going - in the last few years, PAWSA has really burst out onto the dry, minimal tech house sound. Funky basslines, ear candy top line melodies, and singalong one liners lyrics, this track is no exception. Some people like to cry that PAWSA doesn't really release any original music, he just remakes older, less critically acclaimed songs relevant again. For anybody who just found this out, you are uncultured swine. Jk, I don't really care to be honest if he’s incapable of making an original song from scratch. As long as the music makes me and the booth bunnies dance, I'm buzzin…

Notable News - 4 things:

  1. Netflix’s documentary trailer for ā€œAvicii - I'm Timā€ just dropped and it's meh - don't get me wrong, I used to love Avicii. My brother and I were ahead of the curve back in those early 2010 days listening to him during his Tim Bergling era (yes, that’s pre-Levels). But the trailer for the new movie didn't really pull on any of my heart strings. In fact, it didn't even get me excited to want to watch the movie. I know for a few years there, Avicii was the epitome of EDM; he was EDM. Maybe I've just outgrown that time of my life and moved on. But yeah, the movie should be dropping soon (I feel bad that I don’t even care to check the release date). What do you think?

  1. House Hats Collective celebrates its 5th birthday - while also announcing they are taking flight with a hangar rave. Celebrating their new non-profit ā€˜Beats Give Back’ where they are ā€œproviding students and foster care youth the opportunity to create music without barriers,ā€ they’ve clearly shown us all that they set the bar for how to throw a house show. I actually have a personal connection to this Florida-based events and record label collective. Back in 2021, I released a Soundcloud only remix of a track I did with Miami-based tech house artist, ALVES. At the time, our track was House Hats’ most popular release with the most streams and downloads. We even had ACRAZE post an IG story of him playing our song in Brazil. The track is called ā€˜Samba do Brasil’ and is quickly approaching 100k on Spotify if you wanna listen. Long story short, I take pride in owning a House Hats t-shirt as one of their unofficially-signed artists (and yes, I’m aware I own a shirt, not a hat, even though they are literally called ā€˜House Hats.’ Everything was sold out at the time and I panic purchased a shirt that’s tight on me lol).

  1. Is SiriusXM Radio stock about to tank - because Apple Music just dropped a non-stop, around the clock, 24-hour EDM radio station, called ā€˜Apple Music Club.’ My first impression, this is cool because it means more potential listeners into dance music hosted by famous and prominent DJs and tastemakers. Jamie xx, Honey Dijon, FKA Twigs, some of the more culturally important artists in the world of dance have already hosted. My second thought, whoever named this new radio station needs to be fired - like bro, you work for Apple, they literally invent the most iconic product names and this is your best attempt? Anyway, Apple Music has realized it can compete with Spotify by releasing content and services related to the live side of music. They've been releasing recorded live sets of some big name DJs from notable shows in recent years. Does this mean I’m going to cancel my Spotify subscription and move over to Apple Music? No. But it’s a nice new perk current Apple Music users can now enjoy.

  1. Skrillex just wiped his Instagram account - and got a haircut? With over 12.5m followers, he recently opened up about being contractually released from his major labels ties. In other words, Skrillex may very well be an indie artist again. Anybody who's been actually reading my email remembers a few weeks ago when I wrote about the OWSLA (Skrillex’s own record label) Soundcloud account wiping its entire catalog. It sounds to me like 2025 will be a big year for the world of dance. Skrillex is more than a trend setter, he's a genre maker. I'm just praying that his next EP isn't all bass and wubs… I need my four to floor groovy house music too ya know. And yes, I’m not following him on Instagram. I don’t follow people with a single post šŸ’€
