Carpe That DM 😈 - Thanksgiving Edition: Beyonce is a top EDM Artist, Tame Impala invented a new instrument, Chicago has a new Music Nexus, and more...

Oh hey, how are ya - it’s Fourth Co.

Everyday, about 150,000 new songs are released to the world.

That means, there’s been over 778,500,000 tracks released since Lady Gaga wore a meat dress to the MTV Awards.

Only a handful of those deserve your attention, so let’s pitter patter…

Steal This - my most played song this week (probably):

Why it gets me going - Well it is American Thanksgiving and who doesn’t love a good house stuffing. Fellow Chicago-based DJ & Producer Proppa feeding us beans, greens, potatoes, tomatoes, all week long. Not gonna lie, everyone needs to stop sleeping on this dude. He’s easily one of, if not, the best EDM producer I’ve seen in my life. I got to meet him this weekend (not a big deal). Anyway, let’s eat!

Notable News - 4 things:

  1. Beyonce is casually nominated for Top Dance/Electronic Artist by Billboard…. because obviously her extremely formulaic ā€œCOWBOY CARTERā€ country album screams EDM. If you remember, Beyonce took home her 2023 ghost producers’ Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Music Album beating out Bonobo, Diplo, ODESZA, and RUFUS DU SOL. So naturally she’s due for another best Dance Music Artist sweep. So proud of her!

They history doesn’t repeat itself, but it sure does rhyme - this is a post I made back in February 2023 that is still very relevant

  2. Tame impala invented a new instrument called Orchid - and it’s exactly the vibe you'd think. I haven't seen marketing this good since Don Draper in season 4 of Mad Men. Partnering with Telepathic Instruments, it’s basically a midi piano keyboard that helps create chords and arpeggiators on the fly for people who struggle with music theory. Sonically, it uses very warm and early sounding synthesizer samples which again, adds to whole ā€˜Tame Impala vibe.’ The make and build give it an already instant-classic aesthetic appeal. Honestly, just watch (and listen to) the promo vid for yourself. Even if you don’t make music, I’m sure you’ll want to fork over the $49 + $500 (okay so it’s actually $549 USD - not cheap, but I’m already getting fomo without one).

  1. Move over Miami Music Week and Amsterdam Dance Event - Chicago Music Nexus has officially arrived. This past weekend I was able to attend this brand new, in-person Dance Music conference hosted by DJ & Producer Matt Sherman (aka Sherm), and EDM-personality & host of the Elevated Frequencies podcast, Olivia Mancuso. Focused on a new approach to learning your way to navigate the music industry, monetizing your brand, and gaining the tools to succeed as an artist, I have to say, I learned a ton. Being able to brush shoulders with influential people and seeing familiar faces from around the Chicago dance scene helped re-light that spark within me. Oh and the open bar and gourmet food was also pretty hype.

  2. Shazam has reached its 100 Billion search milestone - at first I read this as one single billion and was not impressed at all… but 100,000,000,000 is a lot of zeros for searching music. Not trying to pump my own tires here but my own songs account for 15k Shazams. That means I make up 0.000015% of every Shazam going back to 2008 (when it became available as a mobile app). My math might be very wrong here, I’m a words guy… so don’t go too hard on me.

Quaint Quote of the Week:
